What is an IPL Photofacial?
The Intense Pulsed Light Photofacial, also known as IPL Photofacial or photorejuvenation, is one of the many cosmetic treatments offered at Michelle Esthetics. This anti-aging treatment improves patients’ complexions by enhancing the color and texture of their skin. With pulses of light, IPL undoes the visible damage caused by sun exposure to the face, neck, chest, hands and arms. IPL also targets dermatological conditions such as rosacea, acne, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, melasma, and unwanted hair.
How Does IPL Work?
The IPL skin rejuvenation process is fairly straightforward. First, pigment cells in your skin absorb the targeted light energy emitted by the IPL device and convert it into heat. Next, that heat destroys the unwanted pigment in your skin. Finally, it clears up dark spots (freckles, age spots), unwanted hair follicles, melasma, and blood vessels causing rosacea.

Benefits of IPL Treatment
IPL light treatments are a safe and effective way to enhance all skin types. These skin treatments are typically performed in a series of 3-5 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Each session takes about 30 minutes, and there is no downtime required after treatment. Most importantly, IPL therapy can provide significant results with little to no side effects.
Side Effects of IPL Treatment
IPL treatment can cause a variety of side effects, including redness, swelling, and bruising. Fortunately, these side effects are usually temporary and typically dissipate within a few days of treatment. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as skin irritation, burns, and changes in skin color can occur, but the vast majority of IPL patients never experience them.

Am I a Good Candidate for an IPL Photofacial?
IPL photofacials are a noninvasive treatment that can help improve the appearance of skin blemishes and uneven skin tone. They are a good option for people who want to improve the appearance of their skin without downtime or surgery.
People with Fitzpatrick skin types I-III are generally good candidates for IPL photofacials. People with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI may also be candidates, but they may require more treatments to see results.
If you have any of the following concerns, you may be a good candidate for IPL light therapy:
- Brown spots, sun spots, or other sun damage
- Hyperpigmentation
- Vascular or pigmented lesions
- Acne scars
- Redness or rosacea
- Uneven skin tone
- Fine lines or wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Deficient collagen growth
- Excessive melanin
- Broken facial capillaries
- Other cosmetic signs of aging and serious skin issues
Who Shouldn’t Undergo IPL Treatment?
People with exceptionally light skin or light hair should not undergo IPL treatment since they are more likely to experience burns and skin discoloration. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should also avoid IPL treatment, as it is not known whether the treatment is safe for them. Additionally, people who are taking certain medications, such as Accutane, should not undergo IPL treatment.
If you have any other medical conditions or skin concerns, please be sure to consult a Michelle Esthetics esthetician before undergoing IPL treatment.
How Many IPL Treatments Will I Need?
The number of IPL treatments someone would need would depend on their individual skin condition and goals. Generally, 3-5 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are needed for optimal results. However, some people may only need 1-2 treatments to achieve their desired results.
How to Prepare for Your IPL Treatment
To prepare for your IPL treatment, it’s advisable to avoid lasting direct sun contact, tanning beds, waxing, chemical peels, and any other drugs that could increase your risks of skin damage (antibiotics, Retin A, vitamin A, acne medications, glycolic acids).
What Can I Expect After IPL?
Most people will see a noticeable improvement in their skin after just one treatment. However, some people may need a series of treatments to produce the best possible results.
After an IPL treatment, you can expect your skin’s surface to look brighter and more even-toned. The treatment area may also turn slightly pink or red (like with sunburn) and appear flake-like immediately after the treatment, but you should regain your normal skin texture within a few hours. You should avoid spending time in the sun or using tanning beds for at least a week after your treatment.
To maintain your results, you may need to have additional laser treatments every few months or so. You can also help protect your skin by wearing sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.
